Flobots - Fight With Tools Review
Written on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 by ALLUS Co Shred Mag
“Robots are things that go. Flobots are things that flow.†– Johnny 5

New Album - FIGHT WITH TOOLS
Like Transformers who transform from a vehicle to a robot on the run, Flobots have proven to transform from a skier to a snowboarder in one run, or one day at least. Flobot Stephen Brackett (aka Brer Rabbit) made his conversion from planks to board with a push from friends and a realization.
“I really didn’t like skiing, but I found it pretty easy to do,†Brackett said. “I could go down double-balcks, but wasn’t having fun. Once I actually strapped on a board, I felt like I was riding with the mountain, instead of against it.â€
This sensation and the ease of Brackett’s transformation proved to be enough reason for Brer Rabbit to stay on a board. This coupled with a dramatic ACL injury which Brackett said occurred during a pick-up basketball game with his high school cast of West Side Story.
“He could tell that story without the West Side Story part,†Jesse Walker proclaimed. “But he chooses to add it.â€
More jabs lead to an eruption of laughter that leaks through the cracks of the transformed garage-to-studio that the Flobots call home on Elliot St in Denver. The studio stands behind a two-story white house with blue colonial style trim. A dark path beside the house with a fence, leads to a flower infested back-yard. It is in the yard where this studio, matching the white and blue of the house, is found.
It is in Denver where most of the Flobots grew up. Now that they have experienced success in their native land, this hip-hop group is determined to give back to the community.
Through a non-profit organization, Flobots.org, and the sponsorship of Hunt Alternatives Fund, the Flobots have idle time to spend at the Denver Children’s Home where they teach music and build relationships with Denver’s youth. The experience is monumental to the Flobots, the lone female band member Mackenzie Roberts feels.
“It’s the greatest gift, being able to give back,†Roberts said. “I wouldn’t be where I am and able to do what I do if some teacher in my life hadn’t told me I could do it; if someone hadn’t handed me an instrument and told me that I could do it.â€
When the Flobots aren’t at the Children’s Home, they are at their respective schools, teaching everything from science to music theory and mentoring children. Jonny 5 and Brackett said it is important that the Flobots put action behind the political messages that have become a staple of their music.
Recently the Flobots finished recording their first full-length release, “Fight With Tools.†According to Andy Guerrero, the recording process took much longer and was more work than the Flobots had anticipated.
“We’re very proud of (Fight With Tools),†Guerrero said. “We worked on it for 10 months and it sounds how we want it to sound.â€
